If your static site is not working properly, worry not!
Troubleshooting generally breaks down into four areas:
Important! Once you disable these settings and/or deactivate these plugins, please make sure to Publish your site again with the “Strattic Publish” button in your WordPress dashboard.
1. Static Site Does Not Publish
-
Don’t see a Strattic Publish button at all (and transferred from Flywheel) try this.
-
No visible publish options? This could be your user role has not got publishing privileges. learn more.
-
Have any caching plugins? Clear the cache, delete the cache folder, de-activate and delete the plugin. Note: some themes and page builders have caching options.
-
Have any security plugins? (don’t worry, these can be turned off, we’ve got security covered)
-
Is the post or page saved as a “Draft” or “Private” or “Scheduled”?
-
If the All 404 Redirect to Homepage plugin is installed, it will cause conflicts with our publishing system. It must be disabled and removed.
-
Have content saved outside of the WordPress install directory? HTML, CSS, and JS will work, but PHP will not
-
Permalinks set to Plain? Go to Settings > Permalinks and select one of the pretty permalink structures
-
Is the .htaccess file blank? If so, you can rename it to .htaccess-bkp or similar so that a new one is re-generated.
-
Are you using Rank Math? Redirections in RankMath can only be set to “Default 404”
-
Are you using Squirrly SEO? Please ensure that you have the required redirection settings
-
If the publish progress bar is not working, please check and modify the “Cache-Control” header in the
.htaccess
file to include “no-cache, must-revalidate,”
2. Updating environment – you’ll be able to publish shortly!
-
This usually happens if your site is busy creating and should resolve itself pretty quickly.
-
If it is taking too long there may be another issue such as an issue with your .htaccess or a redirection plugin causing conflicts with our publishing system. (see Static Site Does Not Publish)
3. Something Is Not Styled Correctly
If CSS is not working properly or styles are not showing, please try some of these options:
-
Have any caching plugins? Clear the cache, delete the cache folder, de-activate and delete the plugin. (btw, caching isn’t needed on Strattic)
-
Disable Divi’s “Static CSS file generation” if using Divi under Divi > Theme Options > Builder > Advanced.
-
Disable Jetpack’s CSS module if using Jetpack.
-
Disable minifying files (some plugins and page builders, like Divi, have this option).
-
Deactivate optimization and minification plugins.
-
Try publishing again (sometimes it works!)
4. Something Does Not Function Properly
-
Check the Strattic compatibility article to make sure plugins and features are all static-compatible.
-
Have any caching plugins? Clear the cache, delete the cache folder, de-activate and delete the plugin. Note: some themes and page builders have caching options.
-
Page isn’t loading? try increasing your memory limit.
-
Cannot add or remove plugins (and migrated from Flywheel) try this.
-
Having encoding issues (and migrated from Flywheel) try Step #5 here.
-
Have content saved outside of the WordPress install directory – HTML, CSS, and JS will work, but PHP will not.
-
Site is redirecting to the original site. Did you make changes to the WordPress URL in the admin or database? Make sure to change it back to your site (i.e.
https://yoursite-1a322z.site.strattic.io
). -
Comments aren’t working? For comments to work on the static site, you’ll need to use a third-party comment service like Disqus or FB Comments. Learn more here.
-
Search not working? If there are no search results on the WordPress site, it’s likely because the site hasn’t had a Strattic Publish to Preview or Live yet.
-
Forms not working? Please check out our article on how to get dynamic forms to work on a static site.
-
Images pointing to an old server? Try clearing any caches your website uses. If the problem persists, have you previously used a cache plugin that you have uninstalled? The cache folders may remain, and they need to be manually removed.
-
Are images, videos, 404 pages, and other templates not loading? Are you using the Really Simple SSL plugin? You can safely delete that plugin since Strattic handles SSL for your site.
4. Issues accessing WordPress
-
Getting a forbidden error when trying to access the WordPress login page? This usually will happen if you are hiding the default WordPress login URL. To fix this issue, revert to the original URL or disable the plugin you have used to hide it.
-
500 error was after login? Strattic may not support certain code in your .htaccess file. To test, you can rename it to .htaccess-bkp or similar so that a new one is re-generated.
